The Re-telling of a John Carr Palladian Stately Hall Perched Majestically at the Heart of Denton Reserve. To redefine rural luxury fit for generations to come + to restore the health of the land it sits upon.
It is our privilege to be the architects and interior designers for the reimagining of Denton Reserve—a 2,500-acre, purpose-led project combating climate change through carbon capture, improving biodiversity, and sustainable food production.
We have been tasked with redefining what a rural luxury hospitality experience means for the next generations seeking calm and connection. This project aims to create spaces that restore, provide time in nature, create memorable experiences, and offer a chance to pause.
In 1717, the Ibbetson family elevated themselves from cloth merchants to the rank of gentry with the purchase of Denton Hall Estate in Ilkley, Yorkshire. The purpose of the new design for Denton Hall is to enable, elevate, and engage with the rewilding of the wider Reserve, to invite future visitors to connect and recharge, and to leave a legacy of positive change.
The design will immerse, excite, and invite guests to interact with the exceptional natural landscape surrounding the hall. The spaces within these grand walls will both offer awe while giving space to pause and breathe deeply. A considered, relaxed conversation between heritage design and contemporary detailing.
The palette is inspired by the local landscape—the breathtaking terrain of the surrounding Yorkshire Dales, the soil, the plants, and the creatures. The interior and architectural aesthetic honours its grand history and draws its natural environment in closer to create an unconventional elegance. It is a dance of balance: a collection of curves to soften the classic detailing. We have emptied out the grand spaces so that guests may appreciate the tactile quality of materials and craft that underpin the making of the new hall.
Our approach has been more disciplined than ever to ensure that each choice aligns with the values of our practice and the wider estate: every object, every textile, every piece of art has a story and the potential to restore the balance between luxury accommodation and the vast landscape it sits upon.
A hopeful future for luxury hospitality that looks backward and outward for its purpose.
“Box 9 have been working hard to rethink everything. Considered and curated with an exceptional eye for detail + an unbelievable ability to see beyond everyone’s imagination to create something unique, special and remarkable”.”
